Standing above the town of Ålesund, the famous Aksla viewpoint offers one of Norway’s most striking cityscapes. From here, the colorful Art Nouveau houses stretch out like a painting, framed by the surrounding fjords and the dramatic Sunnmøre Alps in the distance. Every visitor who climbs to the top quickly understands why Aksla is considered a must-see destination.
Climbing the Famous Steps
The classic way to reach the viewpoint is by climbing 418 stone steps from Byparken, the town park in the center. The climb is steep but manageable, and benches placed along the route make it easy to pause. Many travelers say the climb itself is part of the experience, with new perspectives opening at every turn. If you prefer an easier option, the viewpoint can also be reached by road, and you might want a photo of your ride from the top? 🏍️
The Fjellstua Terrace
At the summit you arrive at Fjellstua, a café and viewing terrace that crowns the hilltop. Here, you can enjoy coffee, ice cream, or a slice of svele, a traditional Norwegian pancake. The wide platform gives a full panorama across town, islands, and mountains. On clear days, you might even see as far as the Atlantic horizon. For photographers, the golden evening light makes the scene truly unforgettable.
More Than Just a View
Beyond the main terrace, paths continue along the ridge to smaller viewpoints such as Kniven, offering different perspectives of the city. You will also notice remains of wartime bunkers, reminders of the mountain’s historical role during World War II. A monument to the local poet Kristofer Randers stands nearby, connecting the viewpoint with the region’s cultural heritage.
A Place for Every Season
Aksla is beautiful throughout the season. In summer, long daylight hours create endless photo opportunities, and autumn brings fiery colors to the surrounding hills. No matter the season, Aksla remains the perfect spot to take in the unique setting of Ålesund. For motorcycle riders exploring the coast, the climb to Aksla is an essential addition to any bucket list.
