Femundsmarka National Park is one of Norway’s most untouched regions. This vast wilderness near the Swedish border combines quiet tarmac, gravel stretches, and unique cultural stops. For motorcyclists, it is less about following a fixed route and more about choosing your own adventure among several inviting options.
Røros – The Cultural Gateway
Røros is a natural starting point for exploring Femundsmarka. The old mining town is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and offers cozy cafés, wooden houses, and plenty of history. Many riders begin or end their journey here, but it also works perfectly as a day-ride hub. With good fuel availability, accommodations, and access to several different roads, Røros is the ideal base for exploring the park.
Along the Shores of Lake Femunden
One of the most scenic rides takes you along Lake Femunden . The road towards Synnervika and further east hugs the shoreline and offers big-sky views and peaceful surroundings (road Fv532). Here, the traffic is minimal, and you often share the road only with reindeer and moose. Small settlements like Elgå provide cafés, a visitor center, and access to the historic boat M/S Fæmund II. If you want lake views and calm riding, this stretch is hard to beat.
Kopparleden – History on Two Wheels
Another highlight for riders is Fv28, better known as Kopparleden. This historic copper route links Drevsjø with Tufsingdalen and winds through valleys, rivers, and forests. Today, it is a mix of tarmac and easy gravel that suits most riders. With sweeping bends, light traffic, and a strong sense of history, Kopparleden is a rewarding option if you enjoy longer stretches of road with variation and flow.
Camping and Rider Bases
Overnight options around Femundsmarka reflect the area’s wilderness character. Johnsgård Turistsenter offers cabins, a sauna, and peaceful surroundings beside Lake Langsjøen. For those who prefer a rustic style, Femund Canoe Camp provides tent pitches and simple cabins right in the heart of nature. Both options allow you to slow down after a long day on the road. And don’t forget that you are allowed to camp anywhere in the wild – as long as you are 150 meters for nearest house or cabin. 👍🏻
Trans Euro Trail (TET) Near Femundsmarka
For adventure riders, the Trans Euro Trail (TET) runs close to the region. Section 2b passes through Alvdal and Røros, which means you can combine legal TET gravel tracks with your Femundsmarka ride. The TET is carefully curated to follow public rights-of-way, giving you an authentic off-pavement experience without breaking Norwegian riding rules.
Choosing Your Own Path
The beauty of Femundsmarka is that there is no single “must ride” route. Instead, you have several excellent options:
- Explore the lakeside roads towards Synnervika and Elgå for water views and wildlife.
- Ride Kopparleden for historic character, long curves, and easy gravel.
- Add nearby TET sections for an adventure-ready challenge.
Each area offers something unique, and riders can easily combine them into a short visit or a multi-day tour.
Why Femundsmarka?
Femundsmarka is one of Scandinavia’s last true wilderness areas, with vast pine forests, countless lakes, and a deep silence. Unlike many national parks, it has almost no roads inside, creating a feeling of untouched and boundless nature. Wild reindeer still roam freely here, alongside moose, wolverines, and countless bird species. The combination of raw landscapes and rich Sámi heritage gives the region a strong cultural identity. For riders, it offers rare access to wilderness roads that still feel authentic, remote, and unspoiled.
In the area
Some places are already mentioned in the text above, but to summarize, make sure to consider; TET, section 2b, the UNESCO listed Røros mining city, Grådalsveien, and the motorcycle friendly campsite Røste hyttetun and camping.
