Grådalsveien is a scenic gravel toll road that offers an adventurous and picturesque route between the historic mining town of Røros and the valley of Tufsingdal in Norway. This road is not a main thoroughfare but rather a popular detour for those seeking a unique riding experience through beautiful mountain landscapes.

Route and Access

The road connects the Røros area with Tufsingdal, running through a remote and sparsely populated region.

  • From the Røros side: To access Grådalsveien, one would typically drive from Røros towards Synnervika. From there, a turn-off leads onto the toll road, marked towards Grådalen and Grådalssetra.
  • From the Tufsingdal side: In Tufsingdal, the turn-off to Grådalsveien is signposted from Fylkesvei 26 (County Road 26).
  • Trans Euro Trail: With only minor deviations, Grådalsveien follows parts of Trans Euro Trail (TET) section 2b.

Character of the Road

Grådalsveien is described by riders as a “perfect gravel road”. Some parts featuring a strip of grass running down the middle, but is considered a well-maintained gravel surface. The road is suitable for most bikes, though caution is always advised on such routes. The road is approximately 45 kilometers long, offering a distinct sense of adventure as you traverse the landscape. Due to its nature as a mountain road, it is likely subject to seasonal closures, especially during winter.

Scenery and Experience

The journey along Grådalsveien takes you up over the bare mountain (snaufjellet) before descending into the Tufsingdal valley. This transition provides a varied landscape, from wide-open mountain vistas to the more sheltered, forested valley. Travelers have highlighted the route’s tranquility, noting that it’s possible to ride the entire length without encountering another person.

The area is also praised for its numerous and appealing spots for camping, both on the exposed mountain sections and in the more sheltered areas as you near Tufsingdal. For outdoor enthusiasts, the road also serves as a starting point for hiking. There are marked trails leading towards destinations like Langen and Femundshytta.

For those traveling between Røros and the Femund area, Grådalsveien presents a beautiful detour that offers a more intimate experience.

In the area

If you coming here for Grådalsveien, why not consider doing langer parts of TET since it is part of the section 2b? The mining town Røros, is of course a must stop along your route, and if you are looking for a camp site, why not choose one that is “biker friendly”, like Røste Hyttetun & Camping?
