Kaupang, located near Larvik in Vestfold, is considered Norway’s first town. Established around 800 AD, it became a thriving Viking marketplace. Traders from near and far gathered here to exchange goods, crafts, and stories. For motorcyclists exploring Southern Norway, a stop at Kaupang offers both cultural history and scenic surroundings.

A marketplace of the Viking Age

The name “Kaupang” means “marketplace.” This was no ordinary settlement. Archaeological finds reveal imported silver, glass, and luxury items. Local craftsmen produced jewelry, tools, and weapons for trade. The town was alive with activity, linking Scandinavia to Europe’s wider trading networks. Today, visiting Kaupang lets you imagine how life once bustled here more than 1,200 years ago.

The vanishing of Kaupang

Despite its importance, Kaupang was short-lived. After only 200 years, the town disappeared from history. Scholars believe shifting trade routes and political changes made it less attractive. Natural silting of the harbor may also have reduced its importance. By the year 1000, Kaupang was abandoned, leaving behind only traces in the soil.

What you can see today

The visitor center gives insights into Viking society and everyday life. A reconstruction of a Viking house from Kaupang Viking Town, and a number of information boards help bring the past alive. In summer, guided tours take you through the ancient grounds, where excavations uncovered over 80,000 artifacts. For riders, the area also offers quiet coastal roads, making it a perfect cultural stop during a scenic journey.

Motorcycling to Kaupang

Kaupang is located just outside Larvik, less than two hours from Oslo. The ride takes you along E18 or smaller coastal routes for a more scenic experience. Narrow country roads near Kaupang provide a pleasant contrast to highways, with peaceful farmland and sea views along the way. For those combining history with adventure, it’s an ideal detour.

Why Kaupang deserves a place on your bucket list

Kaupang is more than an archaeological site. It represents the beginning of Norwegian urban life and international trade. For motorcyclists exploring Vestfold, it offers a perfect mix of culture, history, and relaxed coastal riding. Adding Kaupang Viking Town to your Norwegian journey ensures a richer, more meaningful experience.

In the area

If you are heading towards Kaupang, there are other places and roads in the area that you should be aware of. North of Larvik, you’ll find an other Viking town called Midgard Viking Center. I bit further south, there is both Slottsfjell museum and the Slottsfjell tower. Verdens ende (The end of the world) is an interesting and beautiful area, and inland, you’ll find the fun and twisty road 306 – close to Høyjord stave church.
