High above the village of Geiranger, the Ørnesvingen viewpoint delivers one of Norway’s most dramatic panoramas. From this iconic lookout, you gaze straight across the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord. Steep mountainsides and glistening waterfalls, including the famous Seven Sisters, frame the fjord beautifully. Therefore, the view clearly explains why Norway’s west coast scenery tops so many travel bucket lists.

A View Built to Be Seen

Ørnesvingen — The Eagle’s Bend — sits at the highest hairpin of the winding Ørnevegen on Norwegian County Road 63. This stretch climbs about 620 meters above sea level. As a result, drivers and riders enjoy both thrilling curves and breathtaking fjord views. Below the viewpoint, you can spot the abandoned fjord farm Knivsflå clinging to the mountainside.

As part of the Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger–Trollstigen project, the viewpoint offers far more than a simple parking stop. Architects 3RW and Sixten Rahlff designed the platform with clear intention and strong character. In addition, Smedsvig Landskapsarkitekter shaped the surrounding landscape carefully. The site also includes a subtle art installation by May Elin Eikaas-Bjerk. Together, architecture, landscape, and art create a more powerful fjord experience.

The Norwegian Scenic Route project shows Norway’s commitment to blending infrastructure, art, and nature. Since the 1990s, the program has developed 18 carefully selected routes nationwide. Consequently, visitors now experience award-winning architecture even in remote landscapes.

In the Area

Ørnesvingen is only one highlight in a cluster of world-class viewpoints near Geiranger. However, several nearby stops deserve equal attention.

Flydalsjuvet Viewpoint offers another dramatic Scenic Route platform just minutes away. From there, you capture classic postcard views of Geirangerfjord.

Dalsnibba / Geiranger Skywalk rises 1,500 meters above sea level. From this height, you gain an even wider fjord panorama.

Meanwhile, Geiranger Fjord Cruises let you explore the landscape from sea level. You can walk along the harbour, join a boat tour, or kayak beneath the waterfalls.

The Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger–Trollstigen continues with spectacular hairpins and waterfalls (make sure to stop at Gudmundsjuvet).
Finally, the Norwegian Scenic Route Gamle Strynefjellsveg links east and west through high mountain scenery. Therefore, Ørnsvingen works perfectly as part of a larger fjord road trip.
