At Uttakleiv Beach in Lofoten, nature has created something unusual. Among the rounded coastal rocks lies a perfectly shaped tidal pool. From the right angle, it looks like a giant eye staring toward the sky.
This is the Dragon’s Eye (Drageøyet) of Lofoten. And this gem is not hidden far away in the mountains 😄. It sits right by the shoreline, only steps from the parking area. 🅿️
Formed by sea and stone
The Dragon’s Eye is a natural rock formation filled with seawater. Waves and erosion have shaped the circular pool over the last 16.000 years. Dark rock creates the outline. Clear water forms the pupil.
Light, tide, and weather change its appearance. Calm conditions create clean reflections. Rough seas add movement and drama – or completely destroys the illusion… 😱
Uttakleiv is already one of Lofoten’s most photogenic beaches. Mountains rise steeply behind white sand and scattered boulders. The Dragon’s Eye adds another unique element to the landscape.
Because it is so easy to reach, it has become popular among photographers. Sunrise and sunset often provide the best light. Winter sometimes adds snow and ice around the rocks.
Even on a quick stop, the formation is worth exploring. Remember to brag on Instagram! 📸🤣
Perfect for a scenic Lofoten ride
For motorcyclists, Uttakleiv is an easy and rewarding detour if you are on a mission along Scenic Route Lofoten. The coastal roads in this part of Lofoten are smooth and scenic, but after hours of riding between peaks and fjords, it feels good to step out and walk directly onto the rocks. No long hike. No complicated route. Just raw Arctic coastline.
In the area
All roads and all breakes give you something fantastic to look at in Lofoten. Here are some locations you can include in your planning. Hamnøy viewpoint is a must – probably Lofoten’s most photographed subject. Lofotr Viking Museum is also an interesting gem. I have not yet written about it yet, but if you have a drone, also make a stop at the unique football stadium in Henningsvær.
