On top of Aurlandsfjellet mountains, Vedahaugane is a gem along the Norwegian Scenic Route Aurlandsfjellet. This viewpoint offers a great vista with panoramic views over the mountain, valleys and distant mountain peaks.

Walkway and infinity bench

As you ascend the winding road from the Erdal Valley, Vedahaugane reveals itself as a serene spot where the landscape opens to showcase the majestic peaks of the Jotunheimen massif. The viewpoint is designed with a curved walkway and an “infinity” bench. This allows you to take in the views of the valleys and mountains from a sheltered spot. Later, follow the walkway which leads to a unique art installation in a hidden ‘cave’. The installation is called “DEN” by Mark Dion, which provocatively explores humanity’s impact on nature.

In the area

Stegastein Viewpoint: Just a short drive from Vedahaugane, Stegastein offers one of the most famous views in Norway. The platform juts out 30 meters from the mountainside, providing a stunning view over the Aurlandsfjord.

Flotane: Another beautiful rest area along the scenic route, Flotane offers views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It’s a perfect spot for a peaceful break and some great photo opportunities. There is also a picnic table for you to enjoy your lunch outdoor.

Lærdal Tunnel: Known as the world’s longest road tunnel, the Lærdal Tunnel stretches 24.5 kilometers and connects Lærdalsøyri with Aurlandsvangen. Driving through this tunnel is an experience in itself, offering a unique contrast to the scenic mountain route. However, I prefer the scenic route over the mountain every day of the week – unless it is raining 🙂 – or if on a round-trip where I can do both.

Aurlandsvangen: This charming village is the gateway to the scenic route and offers various amenities, including cafes, shops, and accommodation options. It’s a great place to start or end your journey across the Aurlandsfjellet.

Old Lærdalsøyri is in the village centre of Lærdal municipality. It is listed as a national “heritage village” and tourists come to see the old city centre with its 161 wooden houses that date from 1700 to 1800.

Vedahaugane, with its stunning views and intriguing art installation, is a must-visit spot along the Aurlandsfjellet scenic route.
