The Flotane rest area is a beautiful spot along the Scenic Route Aurlandsfjellet in Norway. Located at an altitude of 1200 meters, it offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including gentle ridges, wide plains, and distant peaks and glaciers.

The rest area is designed to be environmentally friendly, with all its electricity sourced from solar panels. It features benches and service facilities, including a unique toilet building that is both functional and designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. Flotane is accessible from early May to late October, making it a perfect stop for riders exploring the scenic route.

Flotane rest area is designed by landscape architect LJB AS – Lars Berge.

In the area

Stegastein Viewpoint: Just a short drive from Vedahaugane, Stegastein offers one of the most famous views in Norway. The platform juts out 30 meters from the mountainside, providing a stunning view over the Aurlandsfjord.

Vedahaugane: On top of Aurlandsfjellet mountains, Vedahaugane is another a gem along the Norwegian Scenic Route Aurlandsfjellet. This viewpoint offers a great vista with panoramic views over the mountain, valleys and distant mountain peaks.

Lærdal Tunnel: Known as the world’s longest road tunnel, the Lærdal Tunnel stretches 24.5 kilometers and connects Lærdalsøyri with Aurlandsvangen. Driving through this tunnel is an experience in itself, offering a unique contrast to the scenic mountain route. However, I prefer the scenic route over the mountain every day of the week. Unless it is raining 🙂 – or if on a round-trip where I can do both.

Aurlandsvangen: This charming village is the gateway to the scenic route and offers various amenities, including cafes, shops, and accommodation options. It’s a great place to start or end your journey across the Aurlandsfjellet.

Old Lærdalsøyri is in the village centre of Lærdal municipality, listed as a national “heritage village”. Tourists come to see the old city centre with its 161 wooden houses that date from 1700 to 1800.
