Crossing Finnmarksvidda along the old postal route, is an adventure that combines the the spectacular vistas of Norway’s rugged wilderness and a deep dive into history dating back to the 1600s. This route, stretching from Alta to Karasjok, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and the challenge of navigating varied terrains. An adventure or dual-sport motorcycle is an advantage. Same goes for rougher tires as this route is mostly gravel, and occasionally challenging!

Starting from Alta, the route takes you through the serene Stabbursdalen valley, known for its lush greenery and tranquil rivers. As you ride along the eastern shores of Lake Iesjavri, the largest lake in Finnmark, you’ll be greeted by stunning vistas of crystal-clear waters and surrounding mountains.

The journey across “hundevidda” is particularly challenging due to its open, windswept plains. Here, the sense of isolation is profound, offering a true escape into nature. The final leg of the journey descends into the Karasjok valley. Here the landscape becomes more fertile and dotted with traditional Sami settlements.

Part of Trans Euro Trail (TET)

The total length of the Old Postal Route is close to 100 km. About half way, you cross road E45. The route NORTH of E45 is part of the Trans Euro Trail (TET). This part consists of nice gravel and also tarmac. But the route SOUTH of E45 is slightly tougher and is removed from the TET due to a missing/destroyed bridge. The water crossing is passable, but be aware not to dive into the river from the bridge head. There has been serious accidents here, so you are herby warned.
I’ve seen a countless solo riders do this part of the route effortlessly. I’m not trying to scare you off, but simply warn you about the water crossing you need to pass. Search for it on YouTube and decide for yourself. 🙂

Cultural Highlights

Along the route, you’ll encounter several cultural landmarks. The Sami culture is deeply rooted in this region, and visiting local museums or engaging with Sami communities can provide enriching insights into their traditions and way of life.

Crossing Finnmarksvidda along the old postal route on a motorcycle is not just a ride. It’s an expedition through history, culture, and some of Norway’s most breathtaking landscapes. With the right preparation and a spirit of adventure, this journey promises to be an unforgettable experience!

When in Alta, make sure to stop at the UNESCO listed Alta museum to have a look at the rock carvings. And if you find yourself this far north, you are probably on your way to or back from the North Cape.
