Tindevegen is a tarmac mountain road nestled in the heart of Norway. It is a hidden gem that promises an unforgettable journey through some of the country’s most breathtaking landscapes. Known as the “Roof of Norway,” this 32-kilometer mountain road connects Øvre Årdal and Turtagrø, offering travelers a unique blend of natural beauty and adventure.

Tindevegen is not maintained by the government, but a private board. It was made to build and maintain the high voltage lines crossing the mountain. For this reason, it is a tollroad with a toll station at Berdalsbandet. The highest point of the road is 1315 masl., and the price is 90 NOK for any vehicle. You pay with credit or debit card.

Tindevegen is part of the shortest land connection between Bergen and Trondheim. It is a popular tourist road with a short distance from Sognefjord to the alpine peaks. Here you will experience it all — from fjord via curvy hairpins to the home of the Norse mythology giants – Jotner – in Jotunheimen.

Winter closed

As you ascend from Øvre Aurdal, up through the steep, narrow hairpins, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of the Jotunheimen peaks and the serene Sognefjord. The road is typically open from May to November, depending on weather conditions, and is accessible to cars, motorcycles, and camper vans.

The route is dotted with numerous viewpoints where you can stop and take in the stunning views, as each turn reveals a new perspective of the majestic mountains and valleys.

For those who wish to explore further, several short hiking trails are available along the road. These trails offer a closer look at the region’s flora and fauna, as well as opportunities for photography.

Make a break at Turtagrø

Arriving at Turtagrø, make sure to stop for a coffee and waffle – or brownie. 🙂 In the junction at Turtagrø, you are also entering the Norwegian Scenic Route Sognesfjellet (road fv55). From here, you can either go west, and if you do, make sure to turn left at Skjolden and take the east side of Lustrafjorden. Here you can ride a wild narrow and fun road to the UNESCO listed Urnes stave church.
If you go east from Turtagrø, you will have a scenic adventure across Sognefjellet towards Vågåmo and Otta.
