Bukkekjerka is a striking and well-known rest area and viewpoint located on the island of Andøya in the Vesterålen archipelago. It’s a prominent viewpoint and rest area along the Norwegian Scenic Route Andøya.
“Bukkekjerka” translates to “Buck’s Church” or “Ram’s Church.” The name refers to a distinctive, naturally sculpted rock formation on the site that resembles a church. The “buck” or “ram” part possibly alluding to old Sami sacrificial sites or local legends.
Architectural Design
The rest area is designed by Morfeus arkitekter (Caroline Støvring and Cecilie Wille). The design aims to blend modern architecture with the raw, dramatic coastal landscape. It’s characterized by sharp lines, concrete, and glass, creating a stark contrast yet harmonious relationship with the rugged nature.
Key Features
Toilets: The toilet building is perhaps the most talked-about feature. It’s a bold, angular concrete structure with a one-way mirror glass wall offering stunning, uninterrupted views of the ocean and coastline while ensuring privacy from the inside. This often gets it listed among the “world’s most beautiful public toilets.”
Viewing Platforms & Walkways: Folded concrete slabs form walkways, benches, and viewing platforms that guide visitors and offer different perspectives of the sea, the coastline, and the Bukkekjerka rock formation itself.
Picnic Area: There are facilities for picnicking, allowing visitors to linger and soak in the scenery.
The View and Experience
Bukkekjerka viewpoint offers breathtaking, panoramic views of the Norwegian Sea (part of the Atlantic Ocean), the rugged coastline with its cliffs and skerries, and the open horizon.
You’re exposed to the elements here – the wind can be strong, and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks is a constant presence. It’s a place to feel the power of nature.
Due to its northern latitude, it’s an excellent spot to experience the Midnight Sun in summer and the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in winter, provided the skies are clear.
You might spot seabirds, and if you’re lucky, perhaps even whales or seals in the distance.
Part of the National Scenic Routes
Bukkekjerka is a highlight of the Norwegian Scenic Route Andøya. This initiative by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration aims to enhance the travel experience along selected routes by commissioning innovative architecture and art installations at viewpoints and rest areas. These projects are intended to be attractions in themselves, drawing tourists and providing high-quality facilities.
