Gudbrandsjuvet is a stunning gorge conveniently located along the main road Fv 63. This fantastic road happens to be the Norwegian scenic Route Geiranger-Trollstigen between Åndalsnes and the UNESCO protected Geirangerfjord.

Gudbrandsjuvet gorge is a 5-meter narrow and 20-25 meter high ravine in which the Valldøla River forces itself through. The river is creating a mesmerizing display of cascading waters and intricate rock formations.

The gorge is easily accessible by the road and is a must-do-stop if you are riding in the area. The ravine’s deep potholes and unique formations have been sculpted by the relentless flow of water over centuries, making it a geological marvel worth exploring.

The legend that named more than a gorge

According to local legend, the ravine was named after a man called Gudbrand. In the 1500s, he supposedly ran off with his new bride and saved himself from his angry pursuers by leaping over the ravine at its narrowest point. Gudbrand was declared an outlaw and spent the rest of his life in a stone hut in one of the side-valleys above Gudbrandsjuvet. The valley is still known as (guess what?!) Gudbrandsdalen (Gudbrand’s valley) to this day.

Visitors to Gudbrandsjuvet can enjoy the scenic viewpoints and the tranquil sound of the rushing waters. The area is perfect for a leisurely stroll, photography, and simply soaking in the natural beauty of Norway’s rugged landscape. Whether you’re a history buff intrigued by the legend of Gudbrand or a nature lover captivated by the ravine’s beauty, Gudbrandsjuvet is a must-visit destination on your scenic route adventure ride.

There is both a café and toilets available at the location.

In the area

If you find yourself at Gudbrandsjuvet, you are of course already right on the Norwegian scenic Route Geiranger-Trollstigen. Regardless of direction, you have a number of sites to check out. If you are going north, you can check out Rødven stave church not far from Åndalsnes. You can also check out the gravel road Aursjøveien – which some say is the the wildest road in Norway.

If you’re going south, make sure to stop and enjoy the view at Ørnsvingen before you reach Gerianger. In Geiranger, check out the Seven Sisters waterfall, and after Geiranger you should definitely make a stop at the highest view point in Norway accessible by road, Dalsnibba. I also highly recommend the really beautiful ,scenic gravel road Old Strynefjellsvei.
