Nestled within the heart of the Geirangerfjord, the Seven Sisters waterfall stands as a testament to nature’s grandeur and the timeless allure of western fjord landscapes. This iconic natural wonder, known locally as “De Syv Søstrene,” is among the most photographed attractions in the region.
A Symphony of Waterfalls
The Seven Sisters waterfall is a collection of seven distinct streams. They’re cascading down a rugged cliff side, each contributing to a mesmerizing display of natural beauty. The tallest of these streams boasts a free fall of 250 meters, making it a breathtaking sight to behold. Together, the waterfalls descend a total height of 410 meters. Contributing to a symphony of water that enchants visitors from around the world.
Legends and Lore
Local folklore adds a layer of mystique to the Seven Sisters. According to legend, the seven waterfalls represent seven unmarried sisters playfully dancing down the mountainside. Directly across the fjord lies a solitary waterfall known as “The Suitor” (Friaren), which is said to be a suitor, unsuccessfully attempting to court the sisters. This charming tale adds a romantic touch to the already captivating scenery.
Seasonal Splendor
The best time to witness the Seven Sisters in all their glory is during the snow-melt season, from May to July. During this period, the waterfalls are at their most powerful, fed by the melting snow from the surrounding mountains. The sight of the seven streams plunging into the fjord below is nothing short of spectacular, making it a must-see for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Exploring Geirangerfjord
To fully appreciate the majesty of the Seven Sisters, a boat trip on the Geirangerfjord is highly recommended. Either on a sightseeing boat, or from the ferry to/from Hellesylt – if you are going in that direction. Another alternative is to do a hike to one of the cultural landmarks such as the farm Skageflå on the opposite side of the fjord from the waterfalls. The fjord’s serene waters and towering cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop, enhancing the overall experience.
