Kvitskriuprestan, also known as Kvitskriuprestein, is a remarkable natural phenomenon and attraction located in Uldalen in Eastern Norway. These fascinating earth pyramids are a rare geological formation, found only in a few places in Northern Europe.
What are Kvitskriuprestan?
Kvitskriuprestan consists of tall, slender earth pyramids formed from moraine material — a mix of clay and stones — left behind by glaciers during the last Ice Age. These formations are created through a unique erosion process where rainwater washes away the softer clay, leaving the harder stones perched atop columns of earth. The pyramids can reach heights of up to 6 meters and are estimated to be between 100 and 200 years old.
How to Get There
Kvitskriuprestan is located approximately 4 kilometers north of Otta. To reach the site, take the road from E6 towards Uldalen. After about 1.5 kilometers, you will arrive at a dam in Ula, where you can either drive further to a parking area near Kvitskriuprestan or park at the dam and enjoy a scenic walk along the river.
What to expect
Visitors to Kvitskriuprestan can expect a unique and picturesque landscape. You’ll find the pyramids in a steep valley, providing stunning views and excellent photo opportunities. The area is well-maintained, with a parking lot and clear signage to guide visitors. The walk to the pyramids is relatively easy and suitable for most fitness levels.
What’s in the area?
While visiting Kvitskriuprestan, you can also explore other attractions in the Otta area. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy activities such as white-water rafting in Sjoa and musk ox safaris in Dovrefjell National Park, or you can visit some of the road and locations I’ve written about on this site – not too far from Otta.
