Torghatten stands as one of Norway’s most iconic natural landmarks. This majestic mountain, with its distinctive hole piercing through its center, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, geological wonder, and captivating folklore.
A Geological Marvel
Torghatten’s most striking feature is the hole that runs through its middle, measuring approximately 160 meters long, 35 meters high, and 20 meters wide. This natural tunnel was formed during the Ice Age, when the sea level was higher and the waves eroded the rock. Today, it serves as a testament to the incredible forces of nature that have shaped the landscape over millennia.
Hiking to the Top
For those with a spirit of adventure, a hike to the top of Torghatten is a must. The trail is well-marked and suitable for hikers of all levels, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding archipelago and the Norwegian Sea. As you ascend, you’ll pass through lush forests and rocky terrain, eventually reaching the famous hole. Standing inside the tunnel, with the sky visible at both ends, is an experience that is both awe-inspiring and humbling.
Folklore and Legends
Torghatten is steeped in local folklore. According to legend, the hole was created by the troll Hestmannen, who was chasing a beautiful maiden. When he realized he couldn’t catch her, he shot an arrow in anger. The king of the trolls, Sømna, threw his hat to intercept the arrow, and the hat turned into the mountain with a hole in the middle. This tale adds a layer of mystique to the already enchanting landscape.
