Steinsdalsfossen Waterfall is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and travelers seeking a unique experience in Norway. Located in the picturesque village of Steine in Vestland county, this stunning waterfall is just 2 kilometers west of Norheimsund, along the Norwegian Scenic Route Hardanger.

One of the most captivating features of Steinsdalsfossen is its accessibility. Visitors can walk behind the waterfall without getting wet, thanks to a well-maintained path that leads from the car park, along the riverbank, and behind the cascading water. This unique vantage point offers breathtaking views of the waterfall, the charming village of Norheimsund, and the entire Steinsdalen valley.

300,000 tourists every year

With a 50-meter drop, Steinsdalsfossen has become a popular attraction, drawing around 300,000 tourists each year. The waterfall is part of the Fosselva river, which originates from the lake Myklavatnet, located 814 meters above sea level in the mountains above the waterfall.

The best time to visit is during May and June when the snow melts, and the waterfall is at its most powerful.

Steinsdalsfossen is not only a natural wonder but also a convenient stop for travelers. The site offers good parking facilities, a tourist information center, and a café nearby, making it accessible to everyone, including those in wheelchairs, using canes, or with strollers.

As a highlight along the Norwegian Scenic Route, Steinsdalsfossen is a perfect pitstop for those exploring the beautiful landscapes of Norway.

Whether you’re admiring Steindalsfossen waterfall from the patio in front, walking behind it, or enjoying a coffee at the nearby café, Steinsdalsfossen promises an unforgettable experience that showcases the raw beauty and power of nature. So, pack your camera and prepare to be mesmerized by one of Norway’s most spectacular waterfalls.

In the area

O, boy! If you have decided to go see Steindalsfossen, you are passing so many sites and fantastic roads to get there! This is by far one of my favorite parts of Norway to ride in!
If you are coming from south, check out Dyrskar Tourist Road, Austmannalia, Røldal stave church, Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke, rider OVER Røldalsfjellet, instead of the boring tunell along road E134, and lastly; stop at Låtefoss.

If you are coming from east, you are coming along Scenic Route Hardangervidda. Make sure to stop at Vøringsfossen, and do yourself a favor; set aside time to ride the dead-end, but fantastic route to Osafjellet mountain before heading south toward Steindalsfossen. Also, the stretch along Hardanger fjord that you will have to ride, is part of Scenic Route Hardanger.

If you are coming from north, why not include Scenic Route Gaularfjell with its fantastic viewpoint overlooking the hairpins up the mountain side? If you come by Vangsnes by ferry, take a photo of the oversized statue of Fritjov, and not far away, Hopperstad stave church. The ride over Vikafjell mountain is a gem! When getting close to Hardangerfjord, take the small detour from road Rv13 to see Skjervsfossen – and while there, have a look in the public toilet at the parking on top of the waterfall. 😉
