The waterfall Vøringsfossen, near the deep Hardangerfjord in Vestlandet county, stands as one of the country’s most iconic and breathtaking waterfalls. With its dramatic drop and stunning surroundings, it has become a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and travelers alike.
A Natural Wonder
Vøringsfossen is located in the Måbødalen valley in the municipality of Eidfjord, within the Hardanger region. If fact, you are riding right by it when traveling along Norwegian Scenic Route Hardangervidda. The waterfall boasts an impressive free fall of 182 meters (597 feet) and the total height, including the cascades, is approximately 275 meters (902 feet). This awe-inspiring natural wonder is fed by the Bjoreio River, which flows from the Hardangervidda plateau.
A Journey Through History
The name “Vøringsfossen” has its origin from the Old Norse word “vøring,” which means “to warn” or “to guard.” Historically, the waterfall served as a natural landmark for travelers navigating through the rugged terrain of the Hardangervidda plateau. Over the years, Vøringsfossen has captivated the hearts of many, including artists, poets, and explorers who have been inspired by its sheer beauty and power.
Visitor Experience
Today, Vøringsfossen is easily accessible to visitors, thanks to well-maintained roads and viewing platforms. There is one viewing point you can reach from the parking lot at Fossli Hotell. Here you can spectate the forces of the waterfall from a distance. But there is also a newer bridge across the waterfalls, allowing you to see it from above. You can reach this by exiting the road straight after the spiral tunnel when approaching from west. Also, if you are seeking an even closer encounter, there are hiking trails that lead to the base of the falls, providing a unique perspective of the cascading waters.
Conservation and Sustainability
Efforts have been made to preserve the natural beauty of Vøringsfossen while ensuring the safety and enjoyment of visitors. To minimize environmental impact, the construction of viewing platforms and safety barriers was carefully planned. Additionally, local authorities and conservation organizations work together to maintain the pristine condition of the surrounding landscape.
In the area
In this area of the country, other natural wonders are not far away. My suggestions are:
- The tourist roads Old Haukeli road and Austmannalia (Dyreskar tourist road).
- Røldal stave church.
- My favorite; Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke – (but make sure to take road 520). A nice stop on this route is Allmannajuvet.
- Scenic Route Hardanger
- Scenic Route Hardangervidda
- Road 572 Osafjellet
